REVIEW: Couple’s Retreat

Four couples travel to a paradise resort in a bid to rekindle the sparks in their respective relationships….

As tantalising as this may sound, and as funny as the trailer may appear, I warn you not to be fooled. Upon seeing couples retreat, what irritated me the most (in a film consisting mostly of irritating moments) was the sheer rampant egotism of the writers/stars Vaughan and Faverau.

What I mean to say is, the leading men on show here are not the usual, handsome rom-com material. And that would be fine if it weren’t for the fact their partners are all stunningly beautiful Hollywood stars (one of them is Charlotte from SATC for Christ’s sake!). Furthermore, one scene depicts Faverau literally mobbed by a group of young, single women as he arrives at the resort. I mean with that degree of female adulation, does he think he’s Robert Pattinson?

The script itself is disappointingly drab and stale for the comedy big-shots behind it. Also the gags and set pieces never really seem to have a punch-line, so much as a monologue of whining delivered by the hopelessly square Jason Bateman. Frankly, the film is so poor it manages to make Jean Reno –the coolest hitman ever- a target for your hatred. Avoid at all costs.
