The Space in the Students’ Union is the talk of the campus today as it resembles what one can only imagine the Kodak Theatre looks like on Oscars night. The ceremony, which is due to kick off at 8pm, comes after students were asked to nominate themselves or their peers in a number of categories that celebrate media, volunteering, societies and enterprise. The deadline for entries was postponed on two occasions in what is thought to have been a bid to increase the number of entries in each category. It is believed that the total cost of the event is under £3000 and approximately £16 per head.

Q-Con XVI not Q-Com XVI
Looking foreward to tonight should be good fun, lts of luck to all entrants.
Where’s Lorcan on the journalist list, what with his scoop and all?
Why is Jay Downs in the best contribution to the Students’ Union?
By ‘Contribution to Students’ Union Media’ do they mean self-endorsing propaganda?
Lorcan’s the talent!
Fantastic night and ceremony The Space was brilliantly done up for the occasion, even if I did get my feet caught in the chair covers.
Congratulations to all those nominated and all the winners. Looking forward to next years awards.
How was the dance society entered into both: Most Improved Society, and Best New Society?!?
I think going from nothing to something puts them at an unfair advantage next to QR and AIESEC!!!
Thanks Jonnyskay – Gown boycotted the nominations after the office suspension and strife with the Union. While we are now, thankfully, back in Gowntown, the decision was taken too late for us to enter. Anyway, congratulations to Latifa Akay and the rest!
John B. Dick – I believe a friend entered his name as a joke, but since he actually has contributed a lot through RAG he was shortlisted.
Goat – Seeing as it was an independent society that won rather than the SU Mag or the like, that’s a wee bit bitter…
How can the event have cost £3000 at £16 a head? There were about 120 people there last night, do the maths…
Maths boy, I’m sure if you read the sentence again you will notice that it doesn’t say that 16 multiplied by 120 equals 3000$ ever thought that were other costs?
Likes, bows, white drapes etc. Ahem.
Last night’s main prerogative was for the Union to show people what can be done with the space in the hope that clubs and socs will book formals there. End of.
not so fast… I don’t think that was the main aim! I think it was actually to recognise the achievements and efforts of the students. If you have a problem with that maybe call in and talk to the staff in the union. You honestly can’t win with some people – the union will be criticised if they don’t recognise students and now that they do it was just to make sure that “clubs and socs will book formals there.” Don’t think so…END OF!
Hmm, I was invited to the event, I was told on numerous occasions of how great this would be for showing off the Space as a formal venue. Also, this purpose is alluded to in the programme on the tables.
A great night, but the hidden agendas of the Union astound me
I agree with Neil Troll. I too heard Union people talk about how the event was a great opportunity to show off whan can be done with the Space. So flippin’ what? Another example of the money grabbing “Union”…and in terms of what ‘Really??’ is trying to say….don’t be so naive. The Union doesn’t give a damn about students or clubs and socs. And was it REALLY a night to recognise all the work done by clubs and socs? REALLY? From the nominations above there’s not a vast number of clubs and socs mentioned. Anyway, why would a club, soc, or individual want to win an award form the Union when they have to nominate themselves? It’s not like a student will take it upon themselves to nominate a stranger. So any winner, not to take the achievement away from them as I believe ALL clubs and socs are to be celebrated, actually has won a meaningless award. And yeah… Lorcan Mullen and the other Gown journos obviously should have won in those media categories. So…cutting bar staff hours and then spending thousands on an awards ceremony. You’re dead on Dodge.
Bar staff – you should maybe ask the gown if they entered…maybe they did and maybe they didn’t – that’s for them to comment.
Neil – excuse me if I am wrong but was it not mentioned in the programme that it was Mandela, Bar Sub, Speakeasy and the likes for social events? I don’t think it actually mentioned the space so maybe take a look into that
For anyone to say that that event was not to recognise individuals or clubs and societies – you are very narrow minded, shallow and actually just quite bitter. Maybe you should all grow up and realise that our union actually does care and yes there probably have been decisions taken by Mr Dodge and the likes that won’t be popular but can we really sit and make judgements when we don’t know the full story of what is going on?
I would personally like to congratulate all involved in this event and although I won’t be here next year, I will be encouraging my society to enter.
I don’t care whether the gown entered or not. I was using that as an example of how the awards did not in any way whatsoever represent all the students at QUB who are involved in clubs and socs. Anyone who won an award, well done to them and I’m sure they deserve it, as does everyone who works hard at engaging in non-academic/degree stuff at uni, but the awards were basically the Union showing off the space. It might as well have been an end of year dinner for staff, cuz the awards were actually the least important thing about the night. And I’m not bitter or naive. I’m what you’d call a realist with eyes.
Asking people to nominate groups and individuals is of course democratic, but it means that the wider spectrum of clubs and socs aren’t going to get this “recognition” the Union is talking about. Basically, a large number were ignored, and let’s face it, due to the basic fact that they didn’t nominate themselves. How meaningful can an award be that you nominate yourself for? Or if not yourself, a friend or peer that you really like and get on with? So, actually, on second thoughts, the way the nominees were selected was unfair. As well as asking students to nominate groups and individuals, the VPCS, in his position of knowing all about the C and S at QUB he is in the perfect positon to see what groups worked well this year. So there should have been two methods of selecting nominees.
aye but all schlegging aside. the space looked deadly bai! shit awards!
So what if the Students’ Union want to show off the room? Big deal! I think it looked great & would definitely think of having an event there next year. If it saves our society money by using the SU instead of a hotel, then I’m all for it. We don’t have a lot of money in our society and if we can stretch it to an end of year event in the Space, then I’m in.
lol
