NEWS: Three QUB students to intern with Washington Ireland

Three QUB students have been awarded prestigious internships with The Washington Ireland Program. Neill Rodgers (3rd year Law and Accountancy) will be interning with the Republican Congressman Peter King of New York in Capitol Hill. Peter Coulter (3rd Year Modern History and Drama) will be interning with Peter Fenn of Fenn Communications, the Democratic PR Strategist who worked on the Presidential campaigns of Al Gore and John Kerry, and part time Politics student Claire Sugden will be interning with the US Department of Health.

The Washington Ireland Program (WIP)  is an organisation designed to give students a rich insight into America’s professional and social culture through a two-month internship and an intensive training course in leadership and service. The programme aims to select promising individuals, from Ireland and Northern Ireland, who will ultimately use their unique talents to contribute back to their home communities.

Megan Farrell, WIP Executive Director, says, “This year’s class exemplifies the quality of university students in Northern Ireland and Ireland. All are extremely accomplished and bring a strong sense of service to the program. We are thrilled to welcome them to the WIP program and look forward to their time here in Washington.”

The class was chosen from more than 270 applicants throughout Northern Ireland, Ireland and the UK. “All of the students will emerge from the WIP program with both common and unique experiences that together create a true understanding of real leadership and service,” says Farrell.

WIP, which celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in 2009, awards each student a prestigious internship and promises an exciting summer for all involved. The internships include placements on Capitol Hill, government agencies and the private sector.

“While Washington DC is known for politics, the city is quite diverse and offers an outstanding opportunity for students with interests outside the political area. We are pleased to have internship placements this summer with cultural institutions, research centres, large companies and entrepreneurial businesses, ” explains Farrell.

Looking ahead to this summer, all members of the team are excited about the prospects that lie ahead, as Queen’s University student Peter Coulter explains: “On behalf of the three students that will be representing Queen’s in Washington this summer, we are delighted to have this opportunity. We thank Queen’s for continuing to support the Washington Ireland Program and will aim to uphold the university’s strong image abroad.”

If you would like to track the progress of this year’s team from QUB, you can read their personal blogs and view photos at the programme’s website: www.wiprogram.org<http://www.wiprogram.org/>.

This is great. Some satire... I love the Gown!

Get this guy to write more stuff. Maybe something about how Director Dodge is a really lovely man who is loved by everyone in the Union, and a real asset to the students at Queen's.

I didn't think it was possible to lick ones own bottom but I have been proven wrong!

Haha this is one of the most egotistical articles Ive read on this- what a lick!

Peter Coulter? He's an SU Mag regular as far as I'm aware. Typical.

Never done wiping the proverbial buttocks of Queen's.

The point of the article seems to be primarily to stoke the writer's ego, whilst throwing in at the end that other QUB students could be lucky enough to avail of the wonderful opportunity to represent the wonderful Queen's University abroad with idiot American politicians. No thanks. I'll stick with Tesco thanks.

This guy isn't a regular Gownie is he? Haven't noticed his name before. Love the press officer prediction!

What is the point of this article?

Its not news.

It is simply some random guy going on an ego trip...

I don't think he realises how pathetic this makes him look.

Can I write an article for the gown called "I love myself"?
It will consist of how promising and awesome I am. It will also have no patronising comments such as I will use "unique talents" in my local community. Okay it will because I love myself and like to write articles praising ME.
I <3 me.

Why is it that some people just think that because a person, an organisation, or an institution has a fancy title or perceived reputation that they ARE that and are to be respected etc?

Thank God for the Gown.

I'm sure the irony of this article wasn't wasted on the editorial team.

Really surprised at the Gown for printing this but I'm glad they did because it gave me a right old chuckle. Firstly as the Lord has pointed out there above....this guy has quoted himself. Haha!

Also, I predict that this guy will become a press officer for Queen's some time in the future what with his love for upholding the reputation of our great university. It's such a great place to be and the people who run it are so dead-on. Our VC for example is so dead-on that he won't take a pay cut even though UU's VC did, albeit it was small at 5%.

WIP - another organisation which QUB have an affiliation with in order to look good.

Peter, realise who exactly you're writing about in such a positive manner son, unless my prediction of press officer failed journalism hell is ahead of you.

There's an incredible arrogance running through this. You quoted yourself!

And the quote itself...

"We thank Queen’s for continuing to support the Washington Ireland Program and will aim to uphold the university’s strong image abroad.”

Get out from under Gregson's desk! And wipe that mouth.

Also, Peter King is a supreme pratt. Torture sponsor, greed fetishist, Republican legislative / media nihilist.
