REVIEW: Radiohead – The King of Limbs
Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Radiohead are one of the most difficult bands in the world to review. Since In Rainbows eschewed the traditional CD release format in 2007, there has been a tendency for contemporary writing about the Oxford outfit to focus unhealthily upon innovative business models and forward-thinking distribution methods as opposed to their music itself. In addition, you will rarely meet anyone who is ambivalent about Radiohead. Some dismiss the band as sullen, pretentious miserablists, responsible only for sub-Aphex Twin electronica. To the right-thinking majority, they are the most consistently brilliant British group of the last thirty years, but this produces its own problems. There are Radiohead fans who would hail a recording of Thom Yorke eating a bag of crisps as a masterpiece. More broadly, how is it possible to objectively consider new music made by the men responsible for both OK Computer and Kid A?

REVIEW: Yuck – Yuck
Tuesday, March 8th, 2011
Listeners may find themselves gazing at their shoes, or perhaps the ceiling, as Yuck’s self-titled debut album rings out through the speakers of Macbooks and idocks (other computers and speakers are available) everywhere. Named on the BBC’s Sound of 2011 list, the indie-pop-post-rock-five-piece based in London take inspiration from early 90s sounds: fuzz and distortion mixed with retro-modern dreamy qualities, blending together to create a solid-sounding 12 track LP.

REVIEW: Sleigh Bells at the Ulster Hall
Sunday, March 6th, 2011
As part of the indoor street arts festival, Winter Base, which took place in the Ulster Hall, New-Yorkers Sleigh Bells headlined an evening of urban/street/rap/rip-rock/noise-pop music. With the decadent and elegant Ulster Hall adorned with urban street art, a fusion of the old and new came together to create a contrasting backdrop to the music sets from the various artists.

REVIEW: Mogwai at Mandela Hall
Sunday, February 27th, 2011
Mogwai are like a warm blanket, the heaviest, cosiest blanket there is. They wrap you up so completely in their sound that there is no escape from the waves of feedback and distortion that wash over your body. Unless of course they decide to let you escape, because they’re like that, a cat playing with a mouse.

REVIEW: Ellie Goulding – Bright Lights
Thursday, February 3rd, 2011
Ellie Goulding’s version of Elton John’s famous ‘Your Song’ rocketed to the top of the UK Top 40 charts following its well-timed release in conjunction with the recent John Lewis ad. Lending the same charm to the brand that Billy Joel’s She’s ‘Always a Woman to Me’ did following its massive advertising success, ‘Your Song’ has resonated in the hearts of viewers everywhere. A tactical preview-release of the song has generated buzz for her extended album re-release Bright Lights, a musical continuation of Lights, Ellie’s breakout release earlier this year.

REVIEW: The Tallest Man on Earth at Mandela Hall
Friday, January 14th, 2011
Returning to Belfast for a second time, Kristian Matsson – or as most people know him by his stage name, The Tallest Man on Earth – performed to a most reverent crowd in the Mandela Hall. Support act and fellow Swedish songster, Amanda Bergman, opened the show. No one in the crowd was prepared to hear such a strong performance from the supporting act. Lulling the crowd into silence with a rendition of Cat Power’s ‘Naked If I Want to’ among many other covers and some of her own songs, Bergman appeared lost in the music and playing only to herself, seemingly unaware that she had the whole audience entranced.
