NEWS: Hundreds protest to keep cap on fees

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Hundreds of protesters marched on City Hall to call for the cap on tuition fees to be kept today. The demonstration was also against the swingeing cuts being implemented by the Conservative-led government in Westminster and in support of Educational Maintenance Allowance. MLAs from across Northern Ireland’s political spectrum unambiguously spoke against a rise in fees at City Hall. The protest was carried off without incident.

NEWS: Union General Meeting turnout “a disgrace”

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

What was intended to be only the second UGM of the year ended before it could begin as the minimum threshold of students attending failed to be reached. This prevented multiple issues being addressed including voting over the rules governing such meetings, gambling in the Students’ Union and motions relating to the protest on higher tuition fees to take place on the 6 April.

EDITORIAL: Performance related pay only complicates things

Monday, March 28th, 2011

An SU sabbatical officer is elected on a one-year term; if he or she fails to live up to expectations then Student Council can call a vote of no confidence, and in most cases one would assume a resounding defeat for that sabbatical officer would make his or her position untenable. If poor representatives decide to run for re-election at the end of the academic year then the electorate can use their vote to ditch them. That’s politics. It’s as simple as that. Performance related pay seems only to complicate matters.

NEWS: O’Neill to co-operate with PRP despite concerns

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Incoming SU President Jason O’Neill has said that while he is “against PRP on principle”, he will co-operate with the measure if it represents the “popular consensus” of student representatives. Reacting to Student Council’s almost unanimous support of performance related pay on Wednesday 16 March, O’Neill has warned it would “undermine the sense of a team” and could lead to “animosity among the executive”.
