NEWS: SU executive to discuss option of sit-in

 

Monday, November 15th, 2010

 

Queen’s SU representatives will meet on Wednesday to discuss the option of a sit-in for Wednesday 24 November.  What would be a “tokenistic gesture”, VP Campaigns and Communications, Fiona Kidd, said a potential sit-in would take place in conjunction with similar sit-ins planned throughout the UK in opposition to an increase in tuition fees.

NEWS: SU President adamant students can resist fees hike

Responding to the coalition government’s proposals on higher education funding this week, SU President, Gareth McGreevy said there is no way that students at Queen’s will pay £9,000 for fees. As of 2012, universities in England will be able to charge nearly triple the current cap of £3,290. Students across the UK and Ireland in recent weeks have protested against plans to increase fees in both respective jurisdictions. Next Wednesday, thousands of students will take to the streets of London to have their voices heard at Westminster.

NEWS: Book launched at Queen’s claims hunger strikers not told of British offer

 

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

 

Richard O’Rawe launched his second book, Afterlives, this evening in front of a Queen’s Bookshop filled to capacity. This sequel comes fives years after his bestseller Blanketmen. In his book the former hunger striker claims efforts to reach a settlement between republicans and the British government in July 1981 were thwarted by Gerry Adams and his five-man committee. Guest speaker at the event was Liam Clarke, journalist and co-author of Martin McGuinness: From Guns to Government.

NEWS: Students of Ireland take to Dublin streets

 

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

 

An estimated 40,000 students marched in protest against the Irish government’s intention to increase the university registration fee in the Republic of Ireland. A bus load of students and student representatives from Queen’s University joined the demonstrators in opposition to the potential hike.

THE AULD WAN: Waiting for your tips?

A recent investigation by the Unite trade union has shown that on the anniversary of legislation to prevent employers using staff tips and ‘service charges’ to bring workers’ pay up to the minimum wage levels, the situation has not changed and may be getting worse.
