OPINION: Drinks are too expensive already

Last year, whilst at a consultation meeting organised by Queen’s Students’ Union I was informed by a representative that the SU has higher alcohol prices than the vast majority of student unions in Great Britain and the north of Ireland. As I grew up and first started drinking in England this came as no surprise to me. The so-called ‘offers’ available at Belfast’s nightclubs and bars are nothing in comparison to what can be found across the water. Just a few weeks ago I was in Liverpool and found a fantastic nightclub which sold pints at 70p to students every night of the week.

LETTER: Holocaust Memorial Day 2011

Today, the 27th of January, is Holocaust Memorial Day – a day that we here at Queen’s University Belfast Palestine Solidarity Society believe should be commemorated and reflected upon. Today is a day when we remember all those who died in the Holocaust, of whatever race and creed, where we condemn the suffering and brutality that was committed against all those who were targeted by Nazi Germany. It is also a day to commemorate all those who have suffered, and continue to suffer, as a result of torture, oppression, occupation, ethnic cleansing and Genocide.

REVIEW: The Tallest Man on Earth at Mandela Hall

Returning to Belfast for a second time, Kristian Matsson – or as most people know him by his stage name, The Tallest Man on Earth – performed to a most reverent crowd in the Mandela Hall. Support act and fellow Swedish songster, Amanda Bergman, opened the show.  No one in the crowd was prepared to hear such a strong performance from the supporting act. Lulling the crowd into silence with a rendition of Cat Power’s ‘Naked If I Want to’ among many other covers and some of her own songs, Bergman appeared lost in the music and playing only to herself, seemingly unaware that she had the whole audience entranced.

REVIEW: Bell X1 at The Empire

Ranked at number 9 in The Irish Times’ list of The Best 50 Irish Music Acts Right Now, beating other forerunners for the title such as Snow Patrol and even U2, Bell X1 returned to Belfast’s Empire Music Hall for an imitate acoustic set, an ideal venue for this performance.  With its comfortable atmosphere and unique setting, it provided fans with the ultimate opportunity to get close to the music and the band.

REVIEW: Jimmy Eat World at Mandela Hall

With catchy songs, great stage presence and a talented support act, Jimmy Eat World pleased the crowd on their return to Belfast. Opening for the band were More Than Conquerors, replacing the scheduled Minus the Bear who had to cancel during to ferry crossing problems. The band and its members are relatively young and unknown on the local scene, yet they are still talented musicians making them a good support act for the American band.

REVIEW: Ellie Goulding at the Ulster Hall

Ellie Goulding’s return to Belfast was warmly-received by a capacity audience at the Ulster Hall.  Following the popularity of this year’s success for the young star, Goulding’s autumn tour promotes the release of her new album, Bright Lights, which is already proving to be another success.  Supporting Goulding was the Irish band, The Danger Is. Delivering powerful vocals in the style of Lissie and carried by a heavy bass and drum combo reminiscent of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, their sound is unique among the music trends of now – definitely one to watch.
