NEWS: SU President adamant students can resist fees hike

Responding to the coalition government’s proposals on higher education funding this week, SU President, Gareth McGreevy said there is no way that students at Queen’s will pay £9,000 for fees. As of 2012, universities in England will be able to charge nearly triple the current cap of £3,290. Students across the UK and Ireland in recent weeks have protested against plans to increase fees in both respective jurisdictions. Next Wednesday, thousands of students will take to the streets of London to have their voices heard at Westminster.

REVIEW: FML at the Waterfront

Did you know that in India it is cheaper to buy a prostitute than a condom? Did you know that 95% of statistics are made up? Did you know that last year 500 people died in Ireland through suicide? Suicide and depression among young people make up the key themes of Pol Heyvaert’s touching, hilarious and often random play about the thoughts, feelings and lives of 19 young people from Cork to Belfast. We are told “it’s for every nameless, faceless teenager who now has a chance to be understood”. This is not a play for the faint hearted.

REVIEW: The Social Network

The sheer concept of The Social Network pretty much demonstrates why I could never become actively involved in the film industry, outside of a critical capacity of course. REVIEW: The Social Network Soundtrack

The Social Network is a film which depicts how the largest online community, Facebook came to be. If we consider the popularity of Facebook, which in March of this year registered more hits than Google, it was quite obvious the film was going to create some serious hype. It did not disappoint. The score of ‘The Social Network’ was created by Nine Inch Nails founders Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who had collaborated previously on Nine Inch Nails ‘With Teeth’.

OPINION: Are politics and honesty mutually exclusive?

As every child in the United States will tell you, the first American president was a man of great moral integrity, incapable of telling a lie. As the story goes, George Washington once cut down his father’s cherry tree. Upon finding the tree reduced to firewood, Washington’s father asked him if he knew who had committed such an act. His response of “I cannot tell a lie” is well known in American folklore.

REVIEW: Patrick Monahan at The Empire Laughs Back

The Empire Laughs Back Comedy Club is well known for hosting many comics who have now become well established throughout the UK and Ireland, including Michael McIntyre and Dara O’Briain. The club also hosts lesser known comedians, who still have to widely launch themselves into the public eye. Patrick Monahan is one such comedian, but his relatively unknown status does not deny his skill or talent.
