REVIEW: Green Lantern

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Similar to Marvel’s ‘Thor’, released a couple of months ago, DC’s ‘Green Lantern’ isn’t exactly the easiest comic book property to adapt for the big screen. Having endured since 1940, the character is probably considered, in the shadow of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, to be the biggest alternative to DC’s holy trinity. Having successfully rebooted James Bond back in 2006 with the excellent ‘Casino Royale’, it was Martin Campbell’s task to bring the star trekking superhero to life for mainstream audiences. The results were unfortunately mixed at best.

REVIEW: TT3D: Closer to the Edge

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

TT street racing, despite its continuing controversies, is embedded into the sporting culture of my home country, Northern Ireland. Every year avid bike fans will come from all over the world to spectate, participate and experience the legendary North West 200. Yet shamefully it’s not something I’ve personally ever been a huge fan of, mainly because I’ve never taken the time to really get to know the ins and outs of the sport. So, asking me to watch a documentary about the première event of the calendar year, the Isle of Man TT could potentially be asking for trouble. Boy was I wrong…

REVIEW: Red Riding Hood

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

I wonder how this film might have been envisioned if the Twilight phenomenon hadn’t swept into the hearts of millions of adolescent females across the world. Nevertheless, regardless of how anyone really feels about the story of Edward Cullen and his charmless lover, Bella Swan, it’s happened, it was bloody successful and unfortunately now’s the time for the loosely inspired spin-offs.

REVIEW: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

It begs the question: if the pencil pushers at Disney can’t seem to make visually breathtaking and universally enjoyable Narnia adaptations, then what makes the people over at 20th Century Fox think they can achieve a different result?

REVIEW: The Tourist

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

The Tourist – a remake of the little known French film called Anthony Zimmer – has a leading duo that most film-makers could only dream of pairing. Starring, perhaps, the two best looking actors on the planet at the minute, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, does the film’s plot have more to it than the shallow reasons most people would probably choose to see this?

REVIEW: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Zack Snyder has a history of making a certain type of film, be it his Dawn of the Dead remake or highly successful adaptations of 300, and Watchmen. All the films are essentially littered with brutal, yet stylised, violence as well as oozing tonnes of sex appeal. So whenever it was announced Snyder was attempting a children’s fantasy film about owls, many eyebrows were raised. The results however are really quite remarkable.

REVIEW: RED

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

The latest film from Robert Schwentke, ambiguously titled RED, short for Retired and Extremely Dangerous, both surprised and disappointed in various capacities. Surprising in seeing the level of genuinely top class acting talent scattered throughout the film; surprising also in being one of the few DC Comic adaptations not released by Warner Bros (DC’s parent company) and surprising in how much fun it ultimately was. However, it also disappointed for being, annoyingly, like every other action film throughout 2010.
