Motions for PRP and support of UCU strike carried at SU Council

The first SU Council meeting since the sabbatical elections witnessed a number of constitutional amendments passed as well as the inclusion of two new societies. The meeting also featured a number of heated debates between councillors over the proposal of performance related pay (PRP) and an emergency motion relating to the upcoming University College Union (UCU) strikes on the 21 and 24 March.

NEWS: SU representatives concerned over the fate of NI students

Queen’s student representatives have expressed their concerns after the coalition government’s vote to increase the cap on tuition fees in England to £9,000 was passed on last Thursday. Although the fate of English students has been sealed, that of students in Northern Ireland still hangs in the balance.

NEWS: SU President adamant students can resist fees hike

 

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

 

Responding to the coalition government’s proposals on higher education funding this week, SU President, Gareth McGreevy said there is no way that students at Queen’s will pay £9,000 for fees. As of 2012, universities in England will be able to charge nearly triple the current cap of £3,290. Students across the UK and Ireland in recent weeks have protested against plans to increase fees in both respective jurisdictions. Next Wednesday, thousands of students will take to the streets of London to have their voices heard at Westminster.

NEWS: Technical problems at Students’ Union

 

Monday, October 4th, 2010

 

Queen’s Students’ Union staff and sabbatical officers have been experiencing some technical difficulties with their Microsoft Outlook emailing system over the past week or so. Numerous folders have been deemed “corrupted” and many may be permanently lost. The problem has yet to be resolved.

NEWS: Former Council Speaker quits Union politics as nominations open

 

Friday, October 1st, 2010

 

As nominations to Student Council opened this week, former Council Speaker, Alexander Redpath, has announced that he is stepping down from Union politics. Redpath stated that he can not afford any distractions as he enters his third year as a Law student. ”I am reasonably happy with my contribution over the past two years. It has been good fun at times,” he said.

NEWS: McGibbon and Lo urge students to be extra vigilant after alleged rape

 

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

 

VP Welfare Adam McGibbon and MLA Anna Lo have spoken out about the latest alleged sex attack in the University area. Police are investigating an alleged rape which took place on Saturday morning. It was reported that a woman was viciously attacked by two men in an alleyway between Cromwell Road and Ireton Street between 12:30am and 1:30am. PSNI are currently appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

NEWS: Vice Chancellor reports to Senate on Russell Group submission

Peter GregsonOn 22nd June, QUB Vice Chancellor Peter Gregson provided a brief summary to Senate on the Russell Group submission to the Browne Review. However, Shane Brogan, Students’ Union President at the time, believes that the summary failed to adequately describe what their proposals would mean for students.
