COMMENT: Brown and out

Gordon Brown’s premiership ended with a whimper. As the negotiations between the political parties – in the wake of the general election – reached a conclusion, it became clear that the Labour party would not continue in office. Brown offered up his own head, in a bid to appease the Liberal Democrats. But to no avail. David Cameron formed a Conservative/Lib Dem coalition, ending thirteen years of Labour rule.

FEATURE: Meet the new year, same as the old year

Oh January! The first month of the year, immortalised in a 1970s song. ‘January don’t be cold’, the singer implored. Well this year January wasn’t listening. We’ve witnessed the biggest cold snap since…well I was going to write, “since records began” but (a) I don’t know that for a fact and (b) I don’t know when records began.

COMMENT: The library of the future?

We no longer have to apologetically wave our student cards in the direction of the staff member at the front desk. Thanks to modern technology we can wave them over a scanner, then wait ages for it to respond. Revolutionary times. When we’re old and wizened we can say, “I was there”.
