QUB Fianna Fáil this evening called unanimously on Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil party leader, Brian Cowen to resign. The announcement comes just days after the Fianna Fáil-Green Party coalition government’s formal decision to apply for a multi-billion Euro rescue package from the European Union.

BY CONNOR DALY

It is understood that various other Cumann throughout Ireland have taken the same decision with the intention of pushing Ógra’s National Youth Committee to accept this as the organisation’s official position. QUB Fianna Fáil said it would be “unfair” of the branch to suggest a replacement for Mr Cowen until a leadership contest has been called.

Speaking after the meeting, QUB Fianna Fáil chair, Cathal Skelton said: “When Mr Cowen took over the leadership of the party, it was with great expectations. Since his appointment however, he has failed to live up to these expectations, even taking into account the difficult situations he found himself in due to national and international factors. However, decisions taken over the past 18 months have created quite disquiet within the party. Events of the past 2/3 weeks, coupled with the disregard for the opinions of grassroots members by Mr Cowen, have led to us making public our internal party grievances.”

Following the call from leader of the Green Party, John Gormley for a general election in January, Skelton said, “The Green Party has reflected the opinion of the general Irish public and unbeknownst to themselves, what we believe is the opinion of the majority of ordinary Fianna Fáil members. We at QUB believe that a general election should be called once the budgetary process has been completed.”
