REVIEW: A Night with George
Friday, October 15th, 2010
On the surface, A Night with George is a brash, low-brow, pointless experiment in seeing how much swearing can be squeezed into a 95 minute performance. In execution, however, the crass humour and thin premise provide an effective, emotional and often hilarious account of life in Northern Ireland from the 1970s until present day. From sectarianism and homosexuality to liberal feminism and teenage pregnancy, few social issues are left unturned by writers Brenda Murphy and Donna O’Connor in this unique one-woman show.

NEWS: Stuart review coincides with Browne release
Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
After much speculation, Lord Browne’s review on the future of higher education funding and student finance in England has recommended an end to the current cap on university tuition fees and the endorsement of free market education. In contrast to this, the Stuart Review, compiled by Joanne Stuart of the Institute of Directors, has recommended that not only should fees in Northern Ireland stay the same, but more students throughout the province should receive help through increased maintenance grants. Education and Learning Minister for Northern Ireland, Sir Reg Empey, has thus asked Joanne Stuart to update her review, taking that of the earlier released Browne report into account.

REVIEW: La Dolce Vita
Monday, October 11th, 2010
La Dolce Vita is arguably Federico Fellini’s best remembered work and his greatest hit. The film was the first arthouse film to appear in the US Box Office Top 10 during its release. Americans were awed by its taboo-breaking spectacle and by decadent Europe in general. A wave of lesser imitations followed and Fellini gained his reputation as one of the most prominent voices of art cinema.

REVIEW: The Bicycle Thieves at the QFT
Monday, October 11th, 2010
Even those who weren’t able to attend Queen’s Film Theatre on a cold rainy Saturday in September should need me to tell them how good Vittorio De Sica’s 1948 classic, The Bicycle Thieves, is. History has already decided on that.
