FEATURES: The good and the bad of returning to university

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

The summer months felt like an indefinite time of travels, festivals and parties, with the next academic year far from everyone’s mind. However, October has crept gradually upon us once again. You hear from friends that you haven’t spoken to since exam time and there is frenzy over the dreaded QSIS. The return to university is one that is filled with conflicting sentiments, with both good and bad points accompanying the move back to Queen’s. Fingers crossed that the good outweighs the bad.

NEWS: Joe Higgins MEP makes the case for socialism at Queen’s

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

On the same day as the Irish government’s announcement that the total cost of bailing out Anglo Irish Bank could reach €34bn (£29bn), Socialist Party MEP for Dublin, Joe Higgins, spoke at Queen’s University on the case for socialism. Higgins said the Irish government and working people face a “stark reality” in the coming months if they are to recover from the current financial crisis. The solidarity of citizens and mobilisation of youth must force an entirely different approach in Ireland.

FEATURES: Sony moves its way into motion control market

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

This September saw the long-awaited entry of gaming giant Sony into the motion-controlled gaming market following the Nintendo Wii’s success. Undoubtedly there is a demand for Sony to compete with Nintendo and widen the casual gaming market which they bring in the form of the PS Move.  The Playstation 3 peripheral consists of a new generation Eye Toy, rebranded the PS EYE, which can detect the movement of 3D shapes, and a wand like controller.  Much like the Wii then.

REVIEW: Ray LaMontagne and The Pariah Dogs – God Willin’ and The Creek Don’t Rise

Friday, September 24th, 2010

There is a certain air of mystery about Ray LaMontagne; videos are non-existent and interviews rare. REVIEW: Seasick Steve at the Open House Festival

Friday, September 24th, 2010

The organisers of this year’s Open House Festival certainly chose the right man to bring an amazing week-long celebration of live music to a close. Following a great, mellow set from British band Peggy Sue, Seasick Steve took to the stage shortly after 9pm on Sunday night. The ‘song and dance man’, as he describes himself, set about raising the roof of the marquee in Custom House Square with his own unique brand of foot-stomping, dirty ol’ American blues.
