REVIEW: The Bicycle Thieves at the QFT

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Even those who weren’t able to attend Queen’s Film Theatre on a cold rainy Saturday in September should need me to tell them how good Vittorio De Sica’s 1948 classic, The Bicycle Thieves, is. History has already decided on that.

NEWS: Deputy Prime Minister answers questions at Queen’s

Friday, October 8th, 2010

With the release of Lord Browne’s report on the future of higher education due this upcoming Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg today paid his first visit to Queen’s University, answering questions from students and academic staff of the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy. Introducing Mr Clegg, university Vice Chancellor Peter Gregson accepted that budget cuts to universities may be inevitable but he hopes these cuts to Queen’s resources will “only be a share” of the government’s plans. Speaking at the Great Hall, Clegg spoke of wiping the slate clean for future students and not repeating mistakes made in past recessions.

REVIEW: Mark Ronson and the Business Intl. at the Waterfront Hall

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Most gigs are just that, gigs; a couple of guys up on stage thrashing. However, once a certain level of success has been reached more is expected, there needs to be a show, something that stands out, that can be pulled off with a flourish. This is the sort of concert that Mark Ronson and the Business Intl. needed to put on for their MTV Presents… show at the Waterfront Hall, not least because it was filmed for TV but also the first night of their UK tour and, of course, because its Mark Ronson and he’s a wee bit of a star.

REVIEW: The Pipettes – Earth Vs. The Pipettes

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

The best femme-pop album of the year by far, The Pipettes’ latest album is catchy, upbeat and quite frankly the epitomy of all that is ‘girlie’. Although each track blends seamlessly into the next it is difficult to get overly enthusiastic about any of the tracks or to pin point any that could potentially be future chart toppers.

REVIEW: Linkin Park – A Thousand Suns

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Linkin Park release their fourth album, ‘A Thousand Suns’, with a very different array of material presented across the 15 tracks. They veer more in the path of ‘Minutes to Midnight’ type of material, as opposed to the stereotypical Linkin Park sound which dominated their debut album, ‘Hybrid Theory’.
