REVIEW: Ray LaMontagne and The Pariah Dogs – God Willin’ and The Creek Don’t Rise
Friday, September 24th, 2010
There is a certain air of mystery about Ray LaMontagne; videos are non-existent and interviews rare. In this era of constant celebrity information it could be a hindrance to be so elusive but this does not matter as the music on God Willin’… becomes ever more important as the only connection to his world.

REVIEW: Seasick Steve at the Open House Festival
Friday, September 24th, 2010
The organisers of this year’s Open House Festival certainly chose the right man to bring an amazing week-long celebration of live music to a close. Following a great, mellow set from British band Peggy Sue, Seasick Steve took to the stage shortly after 9pm on Sunday night. The ‘song and dance man’, as he describes himself, set about raising the roof of the marquee in Custom House Square with his own unique brand of foot-stomping, dirty ol’ American blues.

REVIEW: Robyn – Body Talk Pt. 2
Tuesday, September 21st, 2010
Robyn is back with the second instalment of the Body Talk trilogy. Body Talk Pt. 2 is another funky electro album with a punchy and fierce vibe, Robyn’s forte. ‘Hang With Me’ is the first release with its cool, heavy bass line and catchy lyrics. A slice of hip-hop has been added to the album, especially on ‘Criminal Intent’, and ‘U Should Know Better’, a Snoop Dogg collaboration.

REVIEW: Piranha 3D
Saturday, September 18th, 2010
From the trailers and teasers online you think you know exactly what you’re paying to see. That sort of B-movie popular in the 90s, with more gore and carefree nudity thrown in, the sheer audacity of Piranha is reeling in audiences worldwide.

Open House Festival: Nathaniel Rateliff/The Low Anthem/Iron & Wine
Friday, September 17th, 2010
The Open House Festival is for serious music fans, there’s no misogynistic Ragga from Major Lazer or songs cut up and mashed together by 2manydjs. No, not at all. Instead, this is for people who discuss their memories of when Dylan went electric and exactly what The Byrds are trying to say on ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ Tonight was a lesson in politeness, as men with a bit less hair on their head than there was sipped their pints, heads slightly angled to the left and enjoyed the beauty that unfolded in front of them.

REVIEW: Grown ups
Monday, September 6th, 2010
It is amazing how such an incredible line-up could produce such an incredibly bad film. With a cast including Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider, ‘Grown ups’ would seem a certain treat for any movie buff. Unfortunately a great cast is wasted on a film without direction that consists almost entirely of dull one-liners.

REVIEW: Certified copy at the QFT
Monday, September 6th, 2010
‘Certified copy’ is the new film by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, best known for such films as ‘A taste of cherry’ and ‘Ten’. His first film made away from Iran, ‘Certified copy’ stars Juliette Binoche, winner of the Best Actress award at Cannes for her slightly overwrought performance here. Despite the plaudits concerning a tour de force performance from one of France’s premier actresses, there is something more interesting at work in this apparent romantic drama.
