FEATURE: Lights out for Earth Hour

This Saturday, lights across all seven continents of the globe will be turned off in support of WWF’s Earth Hour, to call on action to be taken on climate change. This year major landmarks all over the world will be shutting off their lights at 8.30pm local time, including the Eiffel Tower, The Empire State Building and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Earth Hour is supported by scores of politicians and celebrities such as Boris Johnson, Alexandra Burke, Paloma Faith and, er, Danielle Lineker.

NEWS: CCTV launched in Holylands

A pilot scheme of 12 CCTV cameras in Holylands was introduced yesterday at a press conference led by Belfast City Council. They will be installed over a 4 day period at a cost of £100,000,  and will operate through a wireless network which will be monitored 24/7 from Musgrave Police Station and the emergency centre at the City Hall on St. Patricks Day.

INTERVIEW: QUB alumnus and lead singer of The Answer – Cormac Neeson

Cormac Neeson grins as he recalls playing in Madison Square Gardens, the legendary stage that has been graced by Led Zeppelin in the past. The Answer’s frontman has reason to smile as for the past couple of years they have been living out every rocker’s dream, supporting AC/DC during the Black Ice World Tour in Europe and USA. After initially expecting to get only a few support slots, they stepped out of the huge 14 month tour to concentrate on their 15-date UK tour.

REVIEW: Bill Bailey at the Waterfront Hall

Well known for his surrealist comedy on TV shows such as ‘Black Books’ and his musical virtuosity in his stand-up performances, Bill Bailey has attempted to combine the two in his latest show, ‘The Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra’. The Waterfront Hall played host to the celebrated comedian alongside a full orchestra earlier this month, on the Belfast stop of his UK-wide tour. Ambitious and impressive as the show sounds,  the jokes unfortunately fell flat more often than they hit the right note.

NEWS: Demand for housing as students are turned away from Elms

Students struggled to find accommodation at the start of the academic year when deposits for Elms Village were returned to unsuccessful applicants uncomfortably close to the beginning of term. In some cases undergraduates had just two weeks to find alternative housing in areas already saturated with students.
