REVIEW: Mogwai at Mandela Hall

Mogwai are like a warm blanket, the heaviest, cosiest blanket there is. They wrap you up so completely in their sound that there is no escape from the waves of feedback and distortion that wash over your body. Unless of course they decide to let you escape, because they’re like that, a cat playing with a mouse.

NEWS: Palestine Solidarity Society disrupts Law lecture

The Palestinian Solidarity Society today disrupted a lecture by Solon Solomon, former member of the Israeli Parliament’s legal department, on Israel’s right to self-defence. Entering the lecture, members of the society heckled the lecturer forcing it to be brought to a close after seven minutes. Members of the panel had to be removed from the room by security in the interests of their own safety to calls of “Cheerio, cheerio, cheerio.” The PSS was apparently videoing the lecture without permission.

It’s that time of year again when inhabitants of Hollywood feast on diets comprising solely of green food, the sofa is substituted for the sun-bed, colonic irrigation becomes as frequent as yoga and dozens of identical statuettes are frantically polished gold. For the 83rd year, Hollywood’s finest gather to honour the most talented, unique and deserving of the acting calibre. This year, a stammering king, a technology phenomenon and a disturbed ballerina are characters in the biggest drama of all: the Oscars.

Facebook is the only place you can talk to a wall and not be considered strange. In fact if you’re not on Facebook you’re frequently thought of as not a real human being and God forbid your status does not obtain at least 3 ‘likes’. Twitter, Myspace, Facebook and previously Bebo (RIP) have replaced phone calls and on many occasions actual human contact as human beings move further from the physical world into the virtual. We communicate more, we advertise and we have more opportunities for global fundraising.

NEWS: Candidates emerge for SU sabbatical elections (updated)

Candidates for the upcoming Students’ Union sabbatical elections are beginning to emerge in what is shaping up to be a closely contested campaign. Five of the seven current officers will seek re-election. SU President Gareth McGreevy and VP Education Nathan Anderson on the other hand have decided against standing.
