FEATURES: Under the covers – why we love book lovers

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Recovering cynic though I may be, let me begin by saying that I’m as big-a sucker for a book romance as the next girl. A case in point – I was at a tech rehearsal for a play I was in a few years back, and to while away the time while the long-beard-and-ponytail brigade faffed about with electrical things, I thought I’d finish off North and South, which happened to be on my reading list that week. It was the Good Bit. The bit where the repressed couple-in-waiting finally Get It On (or rather get as close to Getting It On as is possible in a Victorian novel);

…her very heart-pulse was arrested by the tone in which Mr. Thornton spoke. His voice was hoarse, and trembling with tender passion, as he said:

‘Margaret!’

OPINION: This week’s TV

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

A central part of BBC1’s New Year comedy schedule has been the innovative Episodes starring Green Wing’s Tasmin Grieg, Friends star Matt LeBlanc (as himself), and Stephen Mangan, perhaps best known as Dan from I’m Alan Partridge. Now in its fourth week, the premise of this sitcom is that comedy writing husband-and-wife duo Sean and Beverly Lincoln (Mangan and Grieg) must reluctantly relocate to LA to make a big-budget US version of their hit UK sitcom Lyman’s Boys. However, things begin to unravel when LeBlanc is cast in the starring role, for which he is patently and hilariously unsuitable. This is undoubtedly an interesting premise, but sadly the premise is the best thing about Episodes, with the worst perhaps being the immensely irritating theme music.

SPORT: Six Nations preview

Friday, February 4th, 2011

The last Six Nations before the World Cup is just around the corner. It is the last competitive opportunity for coaches to experiment with their squads before flying out to New Zealand this summer. The tension in the build up has been palpable, with none of the teams anywhere near ready to take on the might of the southern hemisphere’s ‘big three’. The desire to gain momentum ahead of the World Cup cannot be far from the coaches’s minds, so don’t expect anything too outlandish ahead of this weekend’s opening fixtures.
