REVIEW: Jackboots on Whitehall

It always frustrates me to no end, some people’s insistence on making films that are, apparently, to coin the tired phrase, ‘so bad, it’s brilliant’ when in reality they’re simply just bad. Unfortunately for débutante directors Edward and Rory McHenry, Jackboots on Whitehall certainly falls into that latter category.

FEATURES: Why the red poppy should be available to all

The red poppy is the immediately recognisable symbol of Remembrance in the British Isles and the former dominions of the old Empire. Its use was once synonymous with commemoration of the slaughter of the Great War, which erupted almost a century ago. In 2010, the poppy still succeeds in encapsulating a national sense of grief for the many subsequent sacrifices of bodies and minds in the pursuit of liberty and in defence of freedom.

REVIEW: Circa

Circa is not your average acrobatics-dance-circus mash-up. What it is is in fact a breath-catchingly mesmerising showcase of the sheer beauty and power of a kind of sado-masochistic physicality. Over the course of 80 intense minutes, six performers push their own and each other’s bodies to their limits in terms of strength, flexibility, agility and endurance, with truly incredible results.

REVIEW: The Temper Trap at the Ulster Hall

The Ulster Hall hosted one of the biggest break-out bands of the past year on the eve of Halloween. Many of the crowd turned out to see The Temper Trap in full Halloween gear, from the X-Factor’s Wagner to Supergirl, and even Santa. They played to a well-filled venue, perfect for the band’s first headlining performance in Belfast. Supporting act, Cloud Control, were enjoyable, filling the room with funky guitar riffs, catchy hooks and electro-poppy goodness.

REVIEW: The Pierces – Love You More EP

Perhaps best-known for their song ‘Secret’, used as the theme to the television series Pretty Little Liars, The Pierces have released a new EP, Love You More. It highlights a transition from the days of their 2000 self-titled debut to an easy-listening, country-sounding album; it’s pretty generic, unassuming and full of Dixie Chick guilty goodness. Having rounded their sound in 2008’s album Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge into a stronger, more self-assured album, The Pierces have gone on to release this EP to mark another growth in their musical career.

REVIEW: Southern at Laverys

Thom Southern, his sister Lucy and their drummer Johnny Lee have been drifting around the Belfast scene for the past year or two playing pub gigs and music showcases. Why then was their latest performance in Laverys Bunker entitled ‘The Launch of Southern’? Having spent the summer in LA recording their self-titled EP, Southern are ready to make what is set to be an interesting return to their home city.

REVIEW: Joshua Radin – The Rock and the Tide

The Rock and the Tide has prompted mixed reviews among fans and first-lime listeners. Following the release of Simple Times, Radin has proved himself able to contend with more mainstream acts, catching onto the trend of upbeat, acoustic pop. But a new sound resonates throughout this album. New instruments and influences help Radin make the move into more experimental music. But is it a success?
