A recent investigation by the Unite trade union has shown that on the anniversary of legislation to prevent employers using staff tips and ‘service charges’ to bring workers’ pay up to the minimum wage levels, the situation has not changed and may be getting worse.

The Manfred Mann song came to mind as I went down past the Lanyon Building one day last week at lunchtime on an errand. The hundreds of graduands, and wives and girlfriends thereof, stalking across the lawns and pavements in their 10 centimetre heels (I’m a bit of SI unit man myself) in their multicoloured best – while the men marched around awkwardly in the suits they hope will impress at those first interviews.

It is clear to me that this newspaper is no longer worthy of the name and should cease to publish forthwith. It is clearly in the hands of people who do not know what they are doing. They insist on writing articles that capture the attention of the student body and – it appears – even seem to impact on the consciousness of members of the University’s staff.
