REVIEW: Ellie Goulding – Bright Lights

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Ellie Goulding’s version of Elton John’s famous ‘Your Song’ rocketed to the top of the UK Top 40 charts following its well-timed release in conjunction with the recent John Lewis ad.  Lending the same charm to the brand that Billy Joel’s She’s ‘Always a Woman to Me’ did following its massive advertising success, ‘Your Song’ has resonated in the hearts of viewers everywhere.  A tactical preview-release of the song has generated buzz for her extended album re-release Bright Lights, a musical continuation of Lights, Ellie’s breakout release earlier this year.

LETTER: QUBSU must lead the way in fighting cuts to education

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Dear Colleagues,

I along with fellow members of the Northern Committee of The Irish National Teachers Organisation yesterday (Saturday 29th January) attended a demonstration organised by NISA against the removal of EMA and education cuts in general. These students are to be congratulated for making a stand and are an example to us all in leadership roles. For as long as they continue to organise the INTO will be proud to support them and will not be drawn into the spurious remarks made by the QUBSU President on UTV that followed their last demonstration on December 9th. At a time when education is facing the biggest attack in over a generation students need unity, strength and leadership not division, squabbles and attack from within.

LETTER: Sinn Féin’s Sue Ramsey – “We are the only party to oppose any increase in student fees in line with inflation in the Assembly”

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

A chara,

Sinn Féin’s position remains clear, we are opposed to student fees. In fact we are the only party to oppose any increase in student fees in line with inflation in the Assembly. The introduction of tuition fees was a step which increased debt for students and their families and detered many from disadvantaged and low income backgrounds from taking up higher education.  Sinn Féin feel is totally unacceptable that the ability to pay for higher education has now become the benchmark for accessing educational opportunity.

OPINION: Drinks are too expensive already

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Last year, whilst at a consultation meeting organised by Queen’s Students’ Union I was informed by a representative that the SU has higher alcohol prices than the vast majority of student unions in Great Britain and the north of Ireland. As I grew up and first started drinking in England this came as no surprise to me. The so-called ‘offers’ available at Belfast’s nightclubs and bars are nothing in comparison to what can be found across the water. Just a few weeks ago I was in Liverpool and found a fantastic nightclub which sold pints at 70p to students every night of the week.

REVIEW: The Tallest Man on Earth at Mandela Hall

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Returning to Belfast for a second time, Kristian Matsson – or as most people know him by his stage name, The Tallest Man on Earth – performed to a most reverent crowd in the Mandela Hall. Support act and fellow Swedish songster, Amanda Bergman, opened the show.  No one in the crowd was prepared to hear such a strong performance from the supporting act. Lulling the crowd into silence with a rendition of Cat Power’s ‘Naked If I Want to’ among many other covers and some of her own songs, Bergman appeared lost in the music and playing only to herself, seemingly unaware that she had the whole audience entranced.
