ARTS: Catalyst Arts gaming exhibition

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

The recent Belfast Festival at Queen’s has seen a diverse range of attractions organised throughout its two week period, none more eye-catching or entertaining than the Catalyst Arts: Gaming exhibition, which provided the public with the opportunity to come along free of charge and relax with a variety of retro games. SignificantlY, Catalyst Arts is a non-profit, members-based organisation, and with a £10 subscription comes some degree of influence in the group’s running. The Catalyst Arts: Gaming show was accessible free of charge to all members of the public. This, and the fact that it was run on a volunteer basis, gave the exhibition a veritable sense of charm from the offset.

REVIEW: Porcupine Tree at Mandela Hall

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Porcupine Tree appeared on the cramped stage of the Mandela Hall and struck their first ever chord in Belfast. They didn’t look like much at first, stumbling around the stage like Ann Widdecombe giving it her all on Strictly Come Dancing. After launching so unassumingly into their first song, however, the band made it clear that after years of touring they knew how to give a solid performance.

REVIEW: Kings of Leon – Come Around Sundown

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Come Around Sundown is somewhat a change of pace for the Kings of Leon from their last album, yet they still maintain their trademark beat and guitar riffs. Unlike Only by the Night, there appears to be very little or none of the crowd risers like ‘Sex on Fire’ and actually goes back to where they started with Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak.

NEWS: SU President adamant students can resist fees hike

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Responding to the coalition government’s proposals on higher education funding this week, SU President, Gareth McGreevy said there is no way that students at Queen’s will pay £9,000 for fees. As of 2012, universities in England will be able to charge nearly triple the current cap of £3,290. Students across the UK and Ireland in recent weeks have protested against plans to increase fees in both respective jurisdictions. Next Wednesday, thousands of students will take to the streets of London to have their voices heard at Westminster.

REVIEW: FML at the Waterfront

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Did you know that in India it is cheaper to buy a prostitute than a condom? Did you know that 95% of statistics are made up? Did you know that last year 500 people died in Ireland through suicide? Suicide and depression among young people make up the key themes of Pol Heyvaert’s touching, hilarious and often random play about the thoughts, feelings and lives of 19 young people from Cork to Belfast. We are told “it’s for every nameless, faceless teenager who now has a chance to be understood”. This is not a play for the faint hearted.

REVIEW: The Social Network

Friday, November 5th, 2010

The sheer concept of The Social Network pretty much demonstrates why I could never become actively involved in the film industry, outside of a critical capacity of course. If one was to approach me with the idea for a story set around the global phenomenon Facebook then I would have laughed them straight out of the office. That would have been a crying shame because I would have cheated a lot of people out of an excellent film.

REVIEW: The Social Network Soundtrack

Friday, November 5th, 2010

The Social Network is a film which depicts how the largest online community, Facebook came to be. If we consider the popularity of Facebook, which in March of this year registered more hits than Google, it was quite obvious the film was going to create some serious hype. It did not disappoint. The score of ‘The Social Network’ was created by Nine Inch Nails founders Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who had collaborated previously on Nine Inch Nails ‘With Teeth’.
