REVIEW: The Walkmen – Lisbon
Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010
Lisbon is the sixth studio album in the ten-year career of New York guitar pop outfit The Walkmen, a group most notable for 2004′s indie-disco staple The Rat. They have since looked to establish themselves as credible, grown-up rockers, reminiscent of Television or The Pixies, although a cameo role on teen drama The OC in 2005 appeared to contradict this grand ambition.

THE AULD WAN: Waiting for your tips?
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
A recent investigation by the Unite trade union has shown that on the anniversary of legislation to prevent employers using staff tips and ‘service charges’ to bring workers’ pay up to the minimum wage levels, the situation has not changed and may be getting worse.

OPINION: The foundation of every state is the education of its youth
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
The foundation of every state is the education of its youth. This self evident truth expressed by the Greek philosopher Diogenes Laertius seems to have been forgotten by those who govern twenty-first century Britain. The recently released Browne report proposes huge increases in student fees, signaling a massive step back for education.

REVIEW: Control at the QFT
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
This year’s Belfast Festival saw the QFT focus upon ‘movies, myths and music’, screening film portrayals of iconic figures such as Ian Dury, John Lennon and Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. Control, directed by Anton Corbijn, dramatises the latter’s brief career and suicide at the age of twenty-three, while Jon Savage’s documentary Joy Division features archival footage of the band as well as interviews with its surviving members.

FEATURES: Fellas in feathers
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
The Lady Boys of Bangkok return to Belfast this November with the fabulous fantasy & feathers cabaret show. Taking place in Custom House Square from Saturday 6 November to Saturday 10 November, the show will be performed by sixteen gorgeous showgirls (showmen) who would not look out of place on a Las Vegas stage. This production is a must see event with amazing performances of Lady Gaga, The Saturdays and Beyonce for all the ‘single ladies’ out there.

REVIEW: Alice Kona Band – Death Record
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
What starts off with a pretty dull and simple rock intro goes off the rails after about 30 seconds into a Teenage Kicks-esque verse, that’s a bit like Katie Melua on Es. Lots of “Woaw”s and “Eh”s make this a song that could easily become a youth-anthem – if it were 1975, as the sound is stuck in decades long past.

REVIEW: Less Than Jake – TV EP
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
As far as novelty albums go, the TV EP by US ska-punk giants Less Than Jake has to be one of the most unusual yet exhilarating attempts in recent memory.
