NEWS: Deaths “the unfortunate reality of struggle,” says Gerry Kelly at Queen’s

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Addressing the annual Sheena Campbell commemoration at Queen’s Students’ Union, Sinn Féin MLA  Gerry Kelly said deaths were “the unfortunate reality of struggle” during the Troubles. Throughout the course of the Troubles, he said ordinary people led extrordinary lives, and it is impossible to do his comrades justice. Sheena Campbell, a Sinn Féin activist and Law student at Queen’s University, was shot dead in October 1992, aged 29. The Sinn Féin branch at the university has since been renamed the Sheena Campbell Cumann.

OPINION: Fashionable scepticism of climate change

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

In an age when phenomena such as global warming and climate change are taken as scientific orthodoxy, it is almost fashionable to be considered a sceptic. Every age has produced rebels; men and women who ‘oppose the system’ and many of them were indeed scientists; but no age has tolerated them to such an extent as the twenty-first century.

OPINION: Shared education is central to reconciliation

Monday, October 25th, 2010

For once in my life I am in agreement with Peter Robinson. FEATURES: Fast & Loose – A writer’s tale

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Twenty-four hours, four student writing teams, one writer-actor duo, a handful of student directors and a horde of student actors. Put them together and what have you got? The terrifyingly exhilarating ‘Fast & Loose’ experience. Or, as I personally like to think of it, the ‘Death of the author’ theory in performance.

NEWS: Hundreds at Queen’s protest against Browne review

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Hundreds of Queen’s students today protested against the recent Browne review at Mandela Hall and outside the university. Student representatives from NUS-USI and the Students’ Union initiated the Union General Meeting at noon and asked students to back their motion to reject Lord Browne’s proposals. NUS-USI President Ciarnan Helferty called not only on students but on families as well to outright reject any proposal to increase tuition charges at Northern Ireland universities.
